It’s easy to get where you need to go during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Take advantage of free travel, active travel options and public transport that covers the city with regular services, 24 hours a day. Our GC2018 Journey Planner makes organising your travel a breeze.
Park ‘n’ ride
Public transport, walking and cycling will be your best options to access events. If you do intend to drive to your event, a limited number of pre-booked Park ‘n’ ride spaces will be available. There is no parking available at GC2018 venues and parking restrictions will be in place around venues.
Park ‘n’ rides will be available to ticketed spectators to access GC2018 venues and transport services including Games shuttle buses. Park ‘n’ ride sites will include facilities for spectator comfort and safety and will also accommodate motorcycle and accessible parking. Games shuttles will run regularly from each venue specific Park ‘n’ ride site with the exception of the two Park ‘n’ rides which are serviced by trains, not shuttles (Beenleigh High School and Varsity Lakes). Not every Park ‘n’ ride site is connected to each venue.
Park ‘n’ rides will be operational at different times according to the competition schedule. To ensure that there is sufficient parking for all competition sessions, those using a Park ‘n’ ride are required to catch a return shuttle bus within 60 minutes of the end of the your competition session. Vehicles left after this time (plus shuttle bus travel time) will be towed at the owner’s expense.
The Park ‘n’ ride sites will be free to use, but some will need to be pre-booked through the GC2018 Journey Planner. Each Park ‘n’ ride site will service specific venues.

Free travel
Leave the car at home and take advantage of the free public transport travel included with your ticket.
During the Games, extra local buses, train and tram (G:link) services will run, making it easier for you to travel to events and explore the local surrounds. Most services will run every 15 minutes or better in peak periods, meaning you can just turn up and go.
To travel for free on public transport, simply show your Games ticket or GOLDOC workforce accreditation when boarding. Free travel can only be accessed on the day of your event – up until 3am the next day – and does not include travel on the Airtrain service or any privately owned and operated bus charters that set their own fares, service levels and timetables.
Free public transport for ticketed spectators will be available on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane on TransLink’s South East Queensland public transport network.
In Cairns and Townsville free travel will be available on TransLink and qconnect bus services.
Active travel
Walking
Walking is a free, healthy and accessible alternative to using a car. It’s one of the best ways to get to venues and experience the surrounds. Many of the venues and Festival 2018 locations are within walking distance of Southport, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and other accommodation hubs. There are many easy to follow routes and dedicated signage will guide you to your venue. Plan your walk here.
Cycling
Cycling will be one of the easiest and most scenic ways to get around the Gold Coast during the Games. To assist you, a number of cycle park locations have been set up close to competition venues and Festival 2018 celebration precincts. Plan your ride here .
Please note that due to extra people travelling to and from the Gold Coast during Games time, bicycles will not be permitted on public transport.
Public transport
Ticketed spectators, GOLDOC accredited workforce and officials can take advantage of free train, tram (G:link), local bus and Games shuttle bus travel. Many high frequency services operate around venue locations and some services will be enhanced during the Games.
To see venue specific transport options go here.
Travel to Festival 2018 events
Festival 2018 and other free events will take place during GC2018. Walking, cycling or public transport may be your best option to access these events.
If you are thinking about going to these events on the day of your Games event, public transport options will be available to take you to the celebrations. Please note that dedicated GC2018 shuttle buses will run to Park ‘n’ rides from competition venues for a limited time after the events and Park ‘n’ ride spaces have an allocated time period.
If you want to attend these free events and don’t have a ticket to a Games event, you will need a go card or Gold Coast go explore card to travel by public transport. Find out more about your ticketing options at translink.com.au/tickets-and-fares Dedicated GC2018 shuttles and Park ‘n’ rides will only be available for use by Games ticketholders.
